You will find here some winter prep info for the different models of heat exchanger on the market. If you don't find your pool heater manufacturer in the list, look at the exchanger in your machine to find out the appropriate technique to dry out your pool heater before winter.
Ground rules: (Applicable to all models)
First, turn the breaker to off
Always disconnect all pipes from the pool heater and remove drain plug if applicable.
When gravity can't assure complete drainage, use the air outlet from a vacuum cleaner or any air blower to push out any residual water in the exchanger.
Blow the air in both the inlet and outlet of pool heater for many seconds.
Ensure the exchanger is completely empty. (Find your heat pump model in the following notes if required)
Plug the in and out access to the exchanger to eliminate the risk of water returning inside the exchanger after the pool is closed.
Place a cover over the pool heat pump.
Specific rules per model.
Summit Titanium 2002 to early 2005.
Summit models without drains. (Tube in tube / Streamer)
Also applicable for most of these products: Aerotemp, Tempo, Tempro, Olympic, Turcotte, Maxtemp before 1989, Ultra before 1994, Thermo-Max, Smartemp, Calorex and most of the imported products.
Example of tube in tube or streamer exchanger.

- Disconnect both water connections on the heat pump
- Empty both pipes to the filter
Attention ! These canister exchanger have the in and out in the center of the canister. (See picture) So the gravity and air blowing will inevitably leave a few centimeters of water in the bottom of the canister.
The best technique is to tilt the machine at 45°. Keep the position until the complete draining of the exchanger.
If your installation prevents tilting of the unit, a wet/dry vacuum cleaner connected to a small tube to the bottom of the exchanger can be used
Another alternative is to use plumbing biodegradable antifreeze liquid and fill the bottom of the exchanger. This liquid is heavier than water and will push the water out. Fill until you see the antifreeze liquid coming out of the exchanger.
- Reconnect pipes. If you store the hoses, plug the exchanger openings with rags and cover the ends with plastic bags
